Why rent a safe deposit box?

Safe Deposit Boxes are ideal for storing valuables. Take a quick inventory of your personal items and ask yourself these questions:

Are these items important to me?

Are these items in danger of fire or theft?

Would it be difficult or impossible to replace these belongings?

Is it possible that I could lose or misplace these items?

Is there any risk that these items could decay or deteriorate if I fail to protect them?

What other articles should I keep in a Safe Deposit Box?

Whether your items are of purely sentimental importance or of great financial value, a Safe Deposit Box will keep them well-protected. Insurance can reimburse you for your loss, but nothing can compensate you for the loss of irreplaceable items that have been destroyed by fire, flood or any other disaster.

    How Safe?

    General Questions

    Yes. Prevent damage by water by sealing items in airtight, zip-lock bags or Tupperware-style containers.


    1. Place your jewellery in airtight plastic bags before placing in a bigger Tupperware


    2. A good way to minimise loss & damage to your expensive jewellery


    3. Perfect for storage of earrings, studs, small jewellery, necklaces, small pendants


    4. Small boxes to organise your jewellery to prevent loss and mix ups

    Always keep a list of your box’s contents, make copies of important documents and even take photos of your most prized items left in the Security Box. That way, if a disaster occurs, your chances of successfully identifying, claiming or recovering an item would be increased.

    No. Unlike all banks which require you to maintain an account with the Bank, enrol as the bank’s credit card holder or use at least one of the bank’s products as a condition precedent for the hiring of a Safety Box, at HB Secured Vaults, no such condition is imposed.

    Some banks may even require a prospective renter to maintain a certain amount in Fixed Deposit before one can even be eligible to rent a Safety Box. In Singapore, it is mandatory to have a minimum of S$5K as Fixed Deposit in the bank before you can even be placed on the waiting list.
    No, they are NOT! But many people mistakenly believe that even if the worst happens, their property has the extra protection of the bank’s insurance.

    The PIDM’s (Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia) RM240,000 guarantee, however, DOES NOT extend to Safe Deposit Boxes. And, to many homeowners’ chagrin, their personal policies may not cut it, either.

    You can store precious metals, jewellery, currency, documents, stamps, art etc. It is a very simple test. Any personal items that would cause you to say, “If I lose this, I am in deep trouble.”
    You cannot store arms, weapons, drugs, flammable liquids, chemicals, perishable items or anything else illegal as per our terms and conditions and which is also against the laws of the country.
    No. Only you and your co-hirers will know the contents of your box. However, we do recommend that you keep a detailed inventory and valuation of your items for insurance purposes.
    Make sure that your family knows that you have a safe deposit box, and where it is located. It would be a good idea to sign a family member on as co-hirer of your safe deposit box. If you don’t tell your survivors about the safe deposit box, they won’t be able to access your safe deposit box.
    Yes, but only if you do not pay your rental fee when it becomes due (as determined by the agreement to rent) and after attempts to notify and locate you prove unsuccessful.

    Yes, the same application process applies for international clients. In addition to photographic identification, please ensure that your proof of address lists your residence abroad.
    Yes, we require all business, club or societies’ account customers to provide appropriate identification of registration. Click here for the list of documents required.

    Accessing Your Safe Deposit Box

    Yes. Each locker can have up to 3 persons for an individual or normal account and 4 persons for a corporate/business account registered to access it.  However, you are supplied with only two keys as only two keys are ever made for each lock on a safe deposit box and copies cannot be made.
    No. Neither Royal Safe Deposit Centres’ staff nor any other agencies have access to your box.
    Yes. You can jointly rent your Safe Deposit Box with a spouse, or other person who would have unrestricted access to the box. (Warning: Merely giving someone else a key will not be enough to grant access. He or she also must sign the rental contract as a joint-renter or co-hirer.)

    An alternative is to appoint a “Deputy” or “Agent” (NOT a Power of Attorney) who will have access to your Safe Deposit Box. A deputy/agent and a general power of attorney are similar in that you may grant or revoke the authority at any time, and the appointment ends if you become incompetent or die. The main difference is that a deputy or agent is appointed in the presence of the box renters and our employee, which gives us greater assurance about the validity of the authorization. Many people are surprised to find that a power of attorney does not allow access to a Safe Deposit Box. We have no way of knowing if the Power of Attorney is still in effect or if the renter was competent when the power of attorney was signed.
    Due to safety and security reasons we do not allow access outside our normal opening hours. However, we may consider such a request base on the degree of urgency and necessity.
    If you lose one or both keys, you MUST inform us immediately for your security. You will need to come into the facility for the locks to be replaced. A specialist locksmith will be required to drill open and replace the lock. The cost of this shall be borne by you.
    NO, WE DO NOT keep any spare keys to your box.

    Insurance

    Each box comes with RM50,000 complimentary liability cover as standard. We can provide top up insurance up to RM5,000,000. For sum insured above RM1,000,000.00 T&C applies. We are the only safe deposit box service provider in the country that offers such high coverage. This is the testament of our strength and credibility.
    No. The insurance will not pay you RM50,000.00. The principle of insurance is not to enrich you but to put you back into the same position before you suffered the lost. Hence, the insurance will pay you only RM20,000.00, your actual lost. If your loss is more than RM50,000.00, your claims will be capped at RM50,000.00 or the actual sum insured. The claim shall be based on the price of purchase without taking into account current market value or any appreciation of value.     In the unlikely event if your documents are damaged for some reason like fire, the insurance will pay for the cost of replacing the documents.

    Cancellation

    It’s very simple. You simply collect your items from your box, sign a form saying you have emptied your box and terminated your rental agreement. You MUST return the two (2) keys issued to you in good order. If you have outstanding dues remaining on your account, you must clear those first.
    If you terminate your rental before your rental expires you will not be refunded for any unused time.
    You will have to make an appointment so that you can be present when we schedule the technician to drill the lock and replace it with a new set of lock. You will be responsible for the cost of the replacement.

    Others

    At the earliest notice of the Principle’s demise, RSDB will, in the interest of the Principle and the rightful beneficiaries, seal the box and will not allow anyone to access the box, except for the retrieval of any Will or burial instructions. This will be done in the presence of RSDB’s staff. RSDB will then advice the beneficiaries on the procedure to obtain a Probate or a Letter of Administration.

    An executor or executrix that you designated to handle your estate after you die would gain access to your safe deposit box, but how quickly, depends on the local laws.

    If you legally appoint a trustee to oversee assets placed in trust before your death, that individual would also have access to the safe deposit box upon your death.

    LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST

    If you decide to install your own safe in your house or office, the question we would like to ask is;

    “Are the items safe in your home/office safe?”
    We would say “The items or your valuables in your home/office safe are only safe when you or NO ONE is in the house or office.

    Why? If the safe is embed into the wall, the intruder may not be able to break into the safe or may not be able to cart it away if you are not home.
    However if someone is in the house/office, from experience, we know most victims will be forced to open the safe at gun or knife point, rendering the safe NOT SAFE when one is at home.
